Tough times don’t last, tough people doAugust 27th, 2021
“Tough times don’t last, tough people do” is a beautiful mantra from Ben Platt’s new song “Dark Times.”
On April 14, 2021 I was discharged from Victoria Hospital after an inpatient stay to help fix a period of overly elevated mood. Following my hospitalization, my friends Jason and Ashley Plant helped me do a photoshoot where I posed with a red blanket as a cape.
The concept of my photoshoot didn’t land with everyone – some saw it as boastful and self-promoting… that wasn’t the point at all. The point was to convey the fight of the mental health journey. Every single one of us is a superhero every day fighting for our wellness, whether we have mental illness or not. The beauty of Jason’s photos captured the start of the photo series where I was sitting on the edge of the river wrapped in my “cape” – conveying the vulnerability and support needed to keep going in the journey… and in a way I meant it to symbolize that everyone of my supports in life – all of you – are my cape. The photo series progressed to a triumphant pose with my outstretched fist showing the strength to persevere through the ups and downs and hurts.
Tragically, not everyone makes it through their mental health journey – but no matter what, we’re all fighting hard. It really feels like a battle sometimes against the biggest forces against us. But we can do it. One breath at a time we move forward with resilience and the support of all the love around us. I’m absolutely committed to not giving up, and it’s my hope always that in my little way of sharing my photos and my story, that I lend a tiny bit of hope to anyone else’s journey too.
This post is dedicated to someone I met along my recent journey who lost their life in the fight to wellness. If ever you’re struggling, reach out – to me, to others, to professionals. There’s an incredible free website called www.wellnesstogether.ca that is a one-stop spot for wonderful mental health and crisis support resources. We’ve all got each other’s backs, and we’re all superheroes in this battle to be our best.
My love always,
